Camp ReCreation (2014, 2015, 2017)
Camp ReCreation is a volunteer based camp for individuals with disabilities in Richardton, ND. Each volunteer counselor is placed with 1-3 campers for the week (Monday through Thursday).Together we play games, have dances, sing songs, make art projects and most important, we make friends. The counselors are responsible for making sure the campers they have been assigned are eating well, using good hygiene practices and ensuring the campers are getting their medications taken in a timely manner each day.
Classroom Volunteering
Prior to my Block I and Block II Practicum experiences, I spent time volunteering in both of the classrooms I was placed in. Not only was the goal to volunteer in the classroom, but to get to know the teacher and the classroom environment prior to coming in for our required two weeks of practicum. I also spent time volunteering in my Block I placement toward the end of the school year to assist the teacher in working with her students one on one.
University of Mary Welcome Week (2016 and 2017)
I volunteered as a Peer Leader for the University's New Student Orientation. As a Peer Leader, I aided in befriending the new students as well as showing them around the campus. In 2017 I served as a Peer Team Leader where I assisted in planning and taking part in training the Peer Leaders for the upcoming Welcome Week.
University Day of Service (2014-2017)
Each year the University of Mary holds a Day of Service where classes are cancelled so that the students are able to go volunteer in the community. Through this experience, I have had the pleasure of volunteering at a nursing home. The following year I went to Fort Lincoln and assisted them in putting up small fences to protect the young trees from the wildlife throughout the winter. In 2016, I went to Youth Works and aided in helping the staff and fellow peers to clean up the property for winter. In 2017, I assisted an elderly couple prepare their yard for winter.
